Understanding people and their relationship to the environment requires a multi-disciplinary approach to research. SST therefore calls upon anthropologists, agriculturists, educators, economists, geographers and a variety of marine and estuarine scientists from within its own ranks and from universities and other NGOs. Such multi-disciplinary approaches enable SST to recommend sustainable lifestyles to coastal communities in a rapidly changing world.

Important aspects of research relate to food security and the manner in which impoverished people are able to rehabilitate and sustain the environment. Products of SST's research are published in books and scientific journals as well as in reports, and are reflected in films.

SST has coordinated projects with participation from Rhodes University, The Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University and the University of Fort Hare, working in collaboration with the Keiskamma Trust, conducted research on the state of food security in the small coastal town of Hamburg, South Africa, in the face of climate change. These initiatives have been supported locally (e.g. PetroSA) and from overseas (e.g. START).
