An underwater 'fanta-sea' garden

Sustainable Seas Trust was one of five environmentally focussed organisations selected for the AlgoaFM Magnetic Storm Charity Garden Challenge at the recent Addo Rose and Garden show. SST teamed up with Floradale Nursery and AlgoaFM DJ KayCee Rousseau for the challenge.

Allan Haschick of Floradale Nursery created a magnificent underwater 'fanta-sea' garden for SST. The challenge required that the garden reflects the ethos, symbolically related to the charity, as well as offering enough appeal to the general public. Allan felt that it was best to keep the design simple as generally the public want to see a garden that is fun, colourful and appealing.

“My starting point for the design for SST was being able to enjoy the oceans for future generations, thus using the oceans in a sustainable way. To translate this into a garden setting I used plants and other marine detail to create a garden the looks like the bottom of the sea,” Allan said.
Succulents and grasses served as coral and seaweed, alongside stones, pebbles, sand and were decorated with ‘manmade’ marine items like boats and fishing nets.

“Fishing nets and ropes represent man’s relationship with the ocean, and how we need to be careful of how we use the ocean to best keep it in a way that we can enjoy it for future generations – much like we would want to enjoy this garden,” Alan concluded.
