Coelacanths

Sustainable Seas Trust arose from the African Coelacanth Ecosystem Programme (ACEP) in which the coelacanth was the focus of attention. The coelacanth is featured in the SST logo. In its first years of existence SST worked with the Tanzanian Government to develop a Marine Protected Area in Tanga to protect coelacanths. SST also supported a desk top study of coelacanth environments and a computerised coelacanth identification system headed by Prof Booth of Rhodes University. For ten years Dr Ribbink has had a close friendship and working relationship with Mr Abe of Aquamarine Fukushima. Almost without exception they met either in Japan or Africa on coelacanth business, but in March 2011 the dramatic earthquake and tsunami in Fukushima impeded the relationship. Remarkably, despite very severe damage to Aquamarine Fukushima which took the full battering of the Tsunami, Mr Abe and his team managed to get Aquamarine Fukushima operational and open to the public again in just over six months.
