For the 2014 International Coastal Clean-Up day, Saturday 20 September, the Kenton-on-Sea based Environmental Steering Committee – which includes the Sustainable Seas Trust; Ndlambe Municipality Environmental Office; Bushmans Kariega Estuary Care Forum; WESSA; Kariega Project; Rotary Conservation wing; and other conservation activists based in the area - hosted an event along the Kariega River.
A river bank cleanup is appropriate as the problem of marine debris does not necessarily start in the ocean, but is dumped further inland and washed down rivers into the oceans.
Thank you Sibuya Game Reserve for making your boats available in order to transport children - chosen from the SST schools programme and Ikamvalesizwe Rotary Interact group - and adult volunteers up the river. Thank you Rotary for providing a lovely meal and entertainment after the clean-up & Sunshine Juice for your generous donation.
Thank you William Bode (Ndlambe), Kieren Bremner (Estuary Care), Nucmisa Mzaza (SST), Fundi Fihlani (Kariega Projects), Kimera Evans (WESSA), Shane Kelly and everyone on the Enviro Steering Group who made it happen! In particular, thank you to Jo Wilmot for organising the lovely lunch and more life jackets and Tony Wiener for braaing for us! and another huge thanks to Mike and Sandy for their boat!
