Managing Estuaries

The South African Government has published a guide to the management of estuaries with clear, often step-wise, indications of how the management plan should be developed. As the Kariega and Bushmans Estuaries are so important to all members of the full spectrum of our communities, Sustainable Seas Trust (SST) is holding an information and discussion session on 28th May, in the Kenton Town Hall at 17:00. Everyone is welcome to attend and participate.

  • 17:00 Tony Ribbink (SST). Welcome
  • 17:05 Fanie Fouche (TBC). The challenge of managing estuaries in the Ndlambe Municipality with a focus on Kariega and Bushmans.
  • 17.25. Prof Janine Adams An Introduction to Estuary Management Plans.
  • 17:55 Prof Nadine Strydom Estuaries in crisis
  • 18:00 Discussion
  • 18:30 Snacks and drinks

Fanie Fouche (Deputy Director: Community Protection Services Ndlambe Municipality) is well known locally for his positive contributions to caring for the Ndlambe Ecosystems, his writing for the local media to promote conservation and he also writes children’s books. He was instrumental, perhaps the strongest driving force, in ensuring that Ndlambe won second prize for the cleanest municipality in the Eastern Cape. Fanie is highly knowledgeable about our local estuaries and needs to lead the processes in developing management plans. Fanie is doing his best to attend, but fears he may not be able to.

Janine Adams is a professor at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University. Her specialist research field is on coastal ecosystems; their functioning, conservation and management. Current research focus areas are the freshwater requirements of estuaries, water quality management of coastal habitats and responses to climate change. Her past research has successfully linked science, policy and management through extensive collaboration and networking with universities, institutes, communities and government departments.

Nadine Strydom is an Associate Professor in Marine Biology at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University. She specializes in coastal fishes and their larval stages. Her particular research focuses on coastal fish nursery areas for which the estuaries play a significant role. She has worked on many estuaries of South Africa, including a programme with SST at Keiskamma (Hamburg).
