At the end of January, Friday 25, the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) and the Sustainable Seas Trust (SST) took the first monumental step towards what promises to be a impactful and valuable adventure across our country’s coastline: the 2013 SAMSA Sea Pledge Saldanha to Sodwana Tour.
Two years ago in 2011, SAMSA partnered with the SST for the first highly successful SEA Pledge: Saldanha to Sodwana Coastal Tour which benefitted countless coastal communities and shared opportunities for education and skills training for all. A huge step forward in ocean conservation was made when the tour made a stop at the COP 17 conference in Durban. Resolutions were read by school children to representatives from 75 different countries and Dr. Biliana Cicin-Sain, President of the Global Ocean Forum, accepted the resolution and made her own personal SEA Pledge on video.
The 2013 tour promises to be even more inclusive, more comprehensive and feature much bigger names. Including personalities like renowned oceanographer and international patron for the SST, Dr Sylvia Earle and 11 time South African free-diving record holder, Hanli Prinsloo.
Due to their close and valuable connection to the SST, SAMSA have naming rights to the tour. Honda has also played an exemplary role in sponsoring SST with our hybrid vehicle and will also be acknowledged at the gathering.
The tour will be held in the region of Tuesday 16 April to Thursday 9 May 2013, covering the coastline from Saldanha Bay in the Western Cape to Sodwana Bay in KwaZulu-Natal. Both teams are currently working on the extensive planning it takes to run such an operation. In the interim, we hope to see you at one of the fifteen stopovers we’ll be visiting; helping us spread the word and promote sustainability in our beautiful seas.
