Spring walk with Klipfontein Primary School

Spring WalkThe Sustainable Seas Trust (SST), Blue Flag Beach programme; WESSA; Ndlambe Municipality Environmental Education Section and the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) recently facilitated a Spring Walk to Kwaaihoek for Klipfontein Primary School.

“Many of the children who attend Klipfontein Primary School, live near the coast but have not yet been to their nearby beach or walked to Kwaaihoek. In offering a Spring Walk we hope to instil a love and pride for the environment among the learners,” Ncumisa Mzaza , the Sustainable Seas Trust’s Education programme said.

The learners, teachers, parents and facilitators set off early on the expedition. At Kwaaihoek the children received a Rocky Shore Explore booklet that they used to capture data and record evidence after SST’s lessons about sea life found on the shores; and conservation of this sea life. Ndlambe Municipality Environmental Education Section also offered an interactive lesson on Biodiversity and Food Chains before it was picnic time, which afforded the facilitating conservationists the opportunity of talking about the importance of recycling and not littering.

After the picnic the learners were taught about fishing permits and how to protect our resources and use them sustainably. Then time to put the new knowledge into action during sand castle competition. In teaching children, the message not only goes home to the adults, but the future generation is informed and empowered to make sustainable choices.
