After two weeks on the road, the SEA Pledge team has just returned from the northern-most and deepest point of the Sea Pledge coastal tour. In Sodwana Bay, SST Director, Dr. Ribbink delivered a presentation to an engaged audience. Afterwards, the team went for a dive with Adventure Mania, an SST supporter, and quickly snapped a group picture before exploring the beautiful two-mile reef that lies within a World Heritage Site.
Sodwana is the halfway point of SST’s coastal tour and we are pleased to announce that since our departure, Mayors or their Councillors from Grahamstown, East London, Port St Johns, the Hibiscus Coast Municipality, Richard's Bay and Sodwana Bay have all put their towns on the SEA Pledge map. The public response in these places has been enthusiastic and a number of businesses, including the South African Shark Conservancy, Noordhoek Ski Boat Club, Blue Wilderness Dive Centre, Zululand Yacht Club and Adventure Mania have become SEA Pledge Ports!
While visiting the Hibiscus Coast, the SST team met Her Worship the Mayor, Nomusa Cynthia Mqwebu, who was eager to support SEA Pledge and plans to pair her COP17 climate change activities with SST’s SEA Pledge project. At the Zululand Yacht Club in Richard’s Bay, sailing enthusiasts discussed marine issues with the SST team and planned a number of activities for SEA Pledge Action Day on December 3rd.
In Port Elizabeth, Honda officially handed over two Honda hybrids that were donated for SST’s coastal tour. Later, the SST team received a warm welcome at the Noordhoek Ski Boat Club where the club generously offered to donate a portion of the proceeds from their International Night Dive Night event on November 3rd to SST.
With every stop along the coast, SEA Pledge is gaining support and forging partnerships while news of our progress is broadcasted even further thanks to a number of media outlets: SST has been featured by Algoa FM, East Coast radio, Kingfisher FM, SABC, The Herald, Grocott’s Mail and local newspapers in the towns visited.
With these successes behind us, we look forward to forging more partnerships on the road ahead. We will soon be visiting Plettenberg Bay, Knysna, Hermanus, Cape Town, Langebaan and Saldanha.
As we prepare for the remainder of this exciting tour, we would like to say a big thank you for supporting our initiative. THANK YOU!
