TALKSHOPS - Hope Spots in South Africa
Date: 18, 20-22, 24 March
Venue: Monument Olive Schreiner
Audience: Grade 8+
While 12% of the world’s land is now under some form of environmental protection as national parks, monuments or world heritage sites, less than three percent of the ocean is protected in any way. Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) are wilderness areas of conservation importance which are managed by government, but in which the general public, including learners and educators, have limited opportunities to assist with conservation. In contrast, Hope Spots are areas where large populations are a resource, and people can be called upon to contribute to the conservation and improvement of their own environment and economies. This Talkshop will look at Hope Spots in South Africa, what learners and educators can and should do in Hope Spots, and how interactive and fun activities can promote the enjoyment of science and protect marine life.
