Educational Programme

The SST educational programme currently works in all four schools in the Kenton on Sea/Bushman's area (Klipfontein Primary, Nompucuko, Ikamvalesizwe and Kenton Primary) and with the Education Support Group in Klipfontein. The programme also lends support to local events and collaborates with WildReach in offering combined events.

Groups of learners from Klipfontein and Ekuphumleni participated daily in the Holiday Club hosted by SST from the 7th to the 10th of April.

The programme featured English Enrichment, Maths and Science Lessons offered by Kariega Project and art lessons and a host of fun activities were offered by SST volunteers. Local lifeguards also offered basic survival skills at the beach and river.

The theme was 'leave only your footprints and your hand prints' and sought to instill the ethos of keeping our oceans & shores clean and to promote this year's Healthy Oceans Healthy Planet World Oceans Day theme.

Scifest Africa 2015

Sst At Sci Fest Africa 2015

SST participated in the WATER WORLD offerings, hosted by The SA Institute for Aquatic Biodiversity (SAIAB), at Scifest Africa 2015.

Visitors of all ages interacted and participated with exhibition materials and enjoyed the opportunity of focusing their lens on marine conservation. As part of SST's Education Programme learners are afforded the opportunity to use cameras, sponsored by Canon, to direct their gaze and sharpen their focus onto all aspects of marine conservation when visiting our rocky shores. At this year's Scifest visitors to the exhibition stand were afforded the opportunity of being on both sides of the lens, click on the image above to view SST's photos of visitors and click on the image below to see the photos captured by visitors to the SST exhibition.

The Educational Support Group participated in a river clean-up, and prior to the event Mark Price of INTEGRATED WASTE & RECYCLING SERVICES (IWARS) explained how recycled materials are used in the production of e.g. things like jacket linings.

SST's Educational Officer, Ncumisa Mzaza showed the Klipfontein Primary School learners a few upcycled projects and in no time at all the learners upcycled their recycling in their own unique way.

Children explore marine life along the shore and use cameras to record their discoveries. Using cameras, generously donated by Canon, helps to focus the children's attention and the young citizen scientists learn to look closely at the creatures and plants they find and record.

Scientists need to know their way around a computer and have to learn to accurately record their data on spreadsheets. At least a term SST's Educational Programme allocates time to advancing the learners' computer skills.

Adopting a beach helps to foster feelings of pride and ownership as learners care for 'their' beach.

SST's Education Programme hosted a holiday club at the Kenton Community Hall during the June/July 2014 holidays - marine themed arts and crafts were made from recycled materials, there was daily fun and games, including a treasure hunt, and an outing to Kenton Middle Beach. Thank you to Cherry Smith, Daphne MacNeill, Rotary Representative Charlotte Wormald, Ndlambe Municipality's William Bode and WESSA intern, Kimera Evans, and Steve Marwanqana for your wonderful creative input and assistance.
