Education is core to what SST does. Education is key to resolving many of South Africa’s major socio-economic and environmental challenges. SST believes that education and skills training are fundamental to the long-term growth and development of South Africa and to the conservation of resources.
Sustainable Seas Trust is currently adding to its educational film material on tides, pollution and maritime careers. SST is also involving the public in educational-photo walks, with a new focus on underprivileged school children. These walks, which take place along the coast, on the rocky shores at low tide, incorporate both simple photography skills and lessons about the marine environment and the conservation thereof. The children are encouraged to interact with the coastal ecosystems in an environmentally-friendly, educational manner and to document this interaction.
Education is core to what SST does as such we have developed these walks into research walks forming part of SST's educational programme where the children gather data from the rocky shore environment; analyse it; and interpret it for trends. These types of walks instil a love for science in these young learners. Other long-term future objectives include establishing education centres around the coast. These centres will drive sustainability and environmental education.
The education efforts of SST have been focused largely in impoverished coastal communities of the Eastern Cape and KZN where community involvement is critically important. The physical products of these initiatives include posters, booklets, films and, more importantly, enlightened adults and children.
SST also offers structural support to WildREACH (Wildlife Outreach), an exciting, progressive and active community engagement project fostering a valuable relationship between student volunteers and local communities in which knowledge is shared and applied in an effort to promote social and environmental sustainability through wildlife conservation.
