“I wish you would use all means at your disposal - films, expeditions, the web, more! - to ignite public support for a global network of marine protected areas, hope spots large enough to save and restore the ocean, the blue heart of the planet.” -Sylvia Earle, TED Prize Winner 2009, SST Patron

National Geographic explorer and grantee Gregg Treinish wants everyone to know about the hidden toxic cost of synthetic fabrics. Synthetic fabrics are tiny, invisible microplastics that are entering our waterways straight from our washing machines. About 2,000 synthetic particles are released from washing a single polyester fleece jacket. All clothing items—including cotton and wool—shed micro-fibers when washed, but the natural fibers biodegrade. Synthetic particles don't degrade and can absorb toxins while traveling through the waterways. If they're eaten by small organisms, such as fish, they can bioaccumulate and end up on our dinner plates.

In this episode of Contiki Cares professional surfer Ellie-Jean Coffey discuss the dangers of everyday products from our lunch packaging to our computer keyboards. The danger lurks in the plastic, a compound found in an overwhelming amount of our daily products. This excess use of plastic is having a drastic impact on marine pollution and human health. The video delves deeper into how exposure to this common compound can pose life-threatening risks to human health.
